Promise Keeper

S: Deuteronomy 12:32NIV- See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.

O: In Deuteronomy 12, God is giving the Israelites specific instructions on how to live when they enter the promise land. Because the land was the former territory of people who served foreign Gods, the people were instructed not to inquire about their Gods, worship in manners that were foreign to them, or sacrifice on the altars of other Gods. God cautions the people in these things so that, "it may always go well with you and your children after you," as it states in verse 28. It goes on to say, "because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of The Lord your God." Gods final words to the Israelites in the chapter are to follow His commands to the letter, without adding or taking away from them.

A: This verse reminds me that receiving a promise from God shouldn't change the heart that led me to receive the promise.  It's easy to take for granted the things God has given you once you already have them. I remember when I first started in the ministry, and dreamed of the days we would see our community affected by the grace of God.  I would do any and everything, because I was so excited by what Jesus was going to do. Operating as a pastor for the past 8 years, I have seen people saved and changed by Jesus, the hungry fed, the homeless gain homes and employment, conferences with a world wide reach, and crowds of people worshipping the name of Jesus. I remember when these were the things I prayed for, that God is allowing me to live out today.  Now that I'm living the promise, I constantly have to check my heart, to remember what got me here in the first place. The prayer for one soul is what led to a thousand. The heart to care about one persons problem led to the care of many. The faith to connect one person to His house led to a house that's expanding into different cities today. Now more than ever it's important to remain faithful and obedient to the God that delivered what He promised.  As believers we can never allow disobedience to ruin Gods promises for our lives.  Always remember that the faithfulness and obedience that opened a door will keep it from closing.

P: God thank you for always keeping Your promises. Help me to always remain faithful and obedient wherever You decide to take me. Amen.
